Trek the endangered mountain gorillas in this 4 days’ safari and hike the Nyiragongo in D.R. Congo. This mountain is an active volcano and this makes it a mountain of wonders as you will see and enjoy the lava lake on its peak. You will have a chance to tour around the city of Kigali where you will learn about the history and culture of this magical country.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Virunga national park
You will meet our professional driver guide who will take you through the plan for the entire tour, have a chance to visit some attractions like genocide memorial centre where several people perished in the 1994 genocide war, visit the local markets among others.
After you will proceed to Virunga national park on a 3-4 hours’ drive, this park is one which still protects the remaining mountain gorillas. It’s located in eastern D.R. Congo, established in 1925 and now recognised as the UNESCO world heritage site.
It is also a home to over 264 tree species, 218 mammal species and 22 are primates, over 706 bird species, among others and all this can easily be spotted. You will check in the accommodation facility upon arrival at the park.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Virunga N/park
You will head to the park headquarters immediately after breakfast for briefing and you will be divided in groups to be able to trek only one gorilla family. Trekking can take 2-3 hours but you will be allowed to spend only one hour in their presence as you take memorable photos.
Trekking is amazing as you spot various attractions like the birds, primates like olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys among others.
Return to the lodge for lunch and after head for a community tour where you will visit some of the Congolese communities for cultural encounter. Interact with them and then learn more, this will enable you to go local.
Day 3: Hike the Nyiragongo volcano
Have an early morning breakfast and then head to Kibat station which is the starting and briefing point. You will receive short instructions and guidelines to follow before starting the hike and at around 10:00hours, you will commence. The hike takes over 6hours and this depends on the energy and speed.
Hiking is hectic and therefore, it needs one who is physically fit. You will enjoy the lava lake on reaching the summit and relax at the top, and spend a night in the mountain huts next to the crater.
Day 4: Descend from Nyiragongo and transfer to Kigali
Descend to the starting point which takes less time compared to ascending after breakfast with beautiful scenery. You will meet the guide at Kibati station waiting for you and after transfer back to Kigali and either a drop off at the Hotel or Kigali international airport will follow hence making the end of the tour.
