Volcanoes national park is the only national park in Rwanda where you can find these habituated gorillas, diverse wildlife among others. Also, you will have a chance to visit Kigali city to know more about the history and culture, hike to Dian Fossey graveyard to know more about the researcher who saved the lives of many mountain gorillas.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Fly to Volcanoes National Park
Meet and greet your driver guide at the airport or hotel and afterwards you will make your way up to the mountains near Parc National des Volcans (Volcanoes National Park). The drive takes about 3 hours and there is no rush to get there. There may be some time to shop along the way.
This park, made famous in the movie Gorillas in the Mist was the base for the American naturalist Dian Fossey to carry out her research on the gorillas in the area.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking and hike to Dian Fossey grave
On this day after a morning breakfast, your guide will drive you to park headquarters. Here you will be briefed as your given instructions about the dos and don’ts on how to trek like no making noise, don’t feed animals among others and be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families.
Once located the apes, the time of which will depend on where the gorillas are located on a given day, you will be able to spend an hour observing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat as they play, nature their children, laugh and feed.
In the afternoon after lunch, you will hike to Dian Fossey graveyard you will be rewarded with some primates on the way like the, Vervet monkeys, olive baboons among several beautiful birds like African Green Broadbill, among others.
Upon reaching, you will be given all the information about Dian Fossey who saved several gorillas from poachers, she was the first person to start gorilla habituations in Rwanda and Virunga conservation area. She later on was murdered by the poachers, and until now her research centre still exists.
Day 3: Fly back to Kigali and Kigali city tour
After an early breakfast, you will check out of the safari lodge/hotel and fly back to Kigali – the capital city of Rwanda. Upon arrival, you will visit the Genocide Memorial site, local markets, king’s palace among other historical sites in Kigali city depending on your scheduled flight. After you will be dropped at the airport and this will be the end of the tour.
